Lisa W. Martin, M.D., F.A.C.C.

Lisa W. Martin, MD is the director for the Lipid Research Clinic and Cardiac Prevention Clinic at The George Washington University.

Dr. Martin was the Cholesterol Management Program—Cardiac Prevention Program medical director for Kiser Permanente in the Mid-Atlantic Region prior to joining The George Washington University.

Dr. Martin received her undergraduate degree from Harvard University in Applied Mathematics, and her medical degree at the University of Florida with Honors in Research. She did her internship and residency in Internal Medicine at the Johns Hopkins University Hospital and fellowship in Cardiology at The George Washington University. She was on the faculty at the University of Maryland before joining Kaiser Permanente.

Dr. Martin’s interests are in all aspects of preventive measures against coronary artery disease, with the emphasis on lipid disorders. Her goals include patient education so that the patients are able to fully participate in strategies to prevent coronary artery disease and recurrent events.

American Society for Nutrition

Founded in 1928, the American Society for Nutrition is dedicated to bringing together the world’s top nutrition research scientists to advance our knowledge and application of nutrition.  American Society for Nutrition is a not-for-profit scientific society with over 4,200 members in more than 75 countries working in academia, practice, government and industry.  It is also a constituent society of the Federation of American Societies for Experimental Biology (FASEB).

Through translational research, American Society for Nutrition members are working to understand how obesity develops and negatively impacts the health of individuals.  With this basic knowledge, members are developing and evaluating strategies to prevent obesity in individuals, to aid and maintain weight loss, and to identify and advocate for environmental and policy changes that best support a healthy weight in the U.S. population.

Red Hot Mamas® is the largest menopause management education program in the North America and over the years, its programs have been offered in over 190 hospitals and physician practices. Its mission is to broaden the base of women’s knowledge about menopause and empower them to become educated healthcare consumers and active partners in the management of their menopause. Red Hot Mamas programs teach women about their health, their specific medical conditions related to their menopausal health status, and the treatment options available to them.

OWL – The Voice of Midlife and Older Women

Founded in 1980 as the Older Women’s League (OWL), OWL is a national grassroots membership organization that advocates on issues solely from the perspective of women as they age.  OWL educates and advocates on behalf of its members on topics including: economic security, health reform, quality of life and mental health care. 

Women interested in joining one of OWL’s chapters can visit the OWL website to get more information.  In addition, visitors to the site can view OWL’s publications, including the Online Observer newsletter, the annual Mother’s Day Report and the blog.

DiabetesSisters is a national nonprofit organization whose mission is to improve the health and quality of life of women with and at risk of developing diabetes and to advocate on their behalf. The organization offers innovative online programming, such as the SisterMatch program, and unique in-person programming, such as the Weekend for Women Conference Series and PODS (Part of DiabetesSisters) Meetups in cities throughout the U.S.

The COSHAR Foundation Inc.

The COSHAR Foundation Inc., founded in 1995 out of a commitment to underserved communities and the nation at large, focuses on health, education, empowerment and outreach.  The foundation works to increase health awareness with a focus on prevention, testing/screening, access to care and optimal treatment.

Through its National Health Ministry Network (NHMN), the foundation impacts health/wellness around the country.  The NHMN’s membership is free to any faith-based organization and currently consists of over 24,500 houses of worship and community-based organizations.  The network has members in each of the 50 states and in the U.S. territories of Puerto Rico and the Virgin Islands.

The foundation’s work would not be possible without its extensive network of volunteers from across the country, which includes both health and non-health professionals.  A 501 (c)(3) organization with headquarters in Bowie, Maryland and affiliate offices in North Carolina, New York and California, the foundation has developed a unique and effective outreach mechanism to reach millions of persons in the U.S. with a concise message and call to action.

The Aspen Institute, founded in 1950, is an international nonprofit organization dedicated to fostering enlightened leadership and open-minded dialogue, through seminars, policy programs, conferences and leadership development initiatives.  The Institute and its international partners seek to promote nonpartisan inquiry and an appreciation for timeless values.  The Institute is headquartered in Washington, D.C., and has campuses in Aspen, Colorado, and on the Wye River on Maryland’s Eastern Shore.  Its international network includes partner Aspen Institutes in Berlin, Rome, Lyon, Tokyo, New Delhi and Bucharest, and leadership programs in Africa, Central America and India.

The Aspen Health, Biomedical Science and Society Program is a venue for academic, government and industry leaders to explore critical issues in health care and health policy and how they may affect individual health and that of families, communities, nations and the world.  By convening bipartisan, multi-disciplinary forums, the program facilitates the exchange of knowledge and insights among decision-makers and helps to forge networks and other collaborations with the ultimate goal of improving human health.

Jacobs Institute of Women’s Health

The Jacobs Institute of Women’s Health (JIWH) was founded in 1990 and became part of The George Washington University School of Public Health and Health Services in 2006.  JIWH works to continuously improve the health care of women across their lifespan and in all populations.  JIWH promotes environments where an interdisciplinary audience, including health care professionals, researchers, policymakers, consumers and advocates come together to discuss ways to advance women’s health.  JIWH publishes Women’s Health Issues (WHI), a leading peer-reviewed, bimonthly, multidisciplinary journal that publishes scholarly research manuscripts related to women’s health services and policy.
