With President Obama signing the Patient Protection and Affordable Care Act into law and the first provisions just now coming into effect, we are experiencing a landmark time for health care in America, and obesity is getting more attention than ever. Just days ago, Dr. Thomas Frieden, Director of the Centers for Disease Control and Prevention (CDC), chose obesity as a top priority – “a winnable battle” – for the CDC.
That is why during this year’s Obesity 2010, a group of obesity policy experts will come together and lead an advocacy forum, sponsored by The Obesity Society, the STOP Obesity Alliance and Obesity Action Coalition, to discuss the essential role that research can play to effect sound policy in the “winnable battle” against obesity. Speakers will discuss, among other topics, the implications of health reform, the need to make sound obesity policy despite scientific uncertainty, and how obesity is linked to poor accessibility.
