STOP Obesity

The Strategies to Overcome and Prevent (STOP) Obesity Alliance brings together a diverse and powerful group of consumer, provider, government, labor, business, health insurers and quality-of-care organizations to stop, think and change how we perceive and approach the problem of obesity, overweight, and weight-related health risks, including heart disease and diabetes.

The goal of the STOP Obesity Alliance is to go beyond awareness and consumer education efforts to identify and address systemic and cultural barriers that are failing to adequately support individual successes.

The STOP Obesity Alliance is focused on:

  • Conducting and assembling research that identifies any cultural and systemic biases in combating obesity and its related health conditions, such as cardiovascular diseases and diabetes

This will be accomplished by examining the disconnect between scientific data demonstrating the harmful health and economic effects of overweight and obesity, and the insufficient action to change the systems that form barriers against effective weight management.

  • Developing and supporting research-based initiatives to improve care and prevention

The initiative will develop strategic approaches to overcoming barriers against effective weight management to help break the cycle of failure most adults face in achieving and maintaining weight loss.

  • Making recommendations and promoting needed systems changes

The STOP Obesity Alliance will explore what has been proven to be effective and build on these efforts in order to map out national approaches and actions for real change.

The STOP Obesity Alliance operates out the Department of Health Policy of The George Washington University School of Public Health and Health Services (SPHHS), under the direction of Christine Ferguson, JD, an SPHHS faculty member of GW University and the former Commissioner of the Department of Public Health for the State of Massachusetts.
