What:

The Strategies to Overcome and Prevent (STOP) Obesity Alliance Essential Health Benefits (EHB) Task Force hosted an expert panel via webinar to discuss the need for and research behind its EHB recommendations. The discussion focused on why it is necessary for obesity-related services to be included as part of the EHB package.

Who:

  • Christine Ferguson, JD, Director, STOP Obesity Alliance (moderator)
  • George Blackburn, MD, PhD, S. Daniel Abraham Associate Professor of Nutrition, Associate Director of the Division of Nutrition, Harvard Medical School and Co-Chair, Reality Coalition
  • Joe Nadglowski, President and CEO, Obesity Action Coalition

Why:

  • U.S. Department of Health and Human Services Secretary Kathleen Sebelius is tasked with developing an essential health benefits package that includes the minimum standard of coverage that must be included by all qualified health plans offered through health insurance exchanges established under the Affordable Care Act by 2014.
  • In order to address the obesity epidemic, obesity and related diseases should be given the same consideration as any other health condition.
  • A comprehensive EHB package that includes obesity-related services has potential to improve the health of millions of Americans, especially those who are medically underserved and suffering from the greatest weight-related disease burden.
