Preventing Chronic Disease: The New Public Health

Alliance Director Christine Ferguson spoke at a briefing co-hosted by the Alliance for Health Reform and the Robert Wood Johnson Foundation on Friday, June 10 in Washington, D.C. from 12:15 – 2:15 PM.  Questions for discussion included:

  • How can prevention and public health be leveraged to improve health and reduce health care costs, particularly within Medicare, Medicaid, and CHIP?
  • What are the threats to the “new public health” in light of budget constraints on the federal, state and local levels?
  • How does the Patient Protection and Affordable Care Act (ACA) relate to public health and prevention activities?
  • How might budget cuts affect public health programs and population health? What efforts are being made to eliminate racial and ethnic disparities in the health of communities nationwide?
