STOP Obesity Alliance Briefing Regarding Attitudes about Obesity in the Workplace and Potential Solutions

The STOP Obesity Alliance held a briefing at the National Press Club on May 22 to discuss findings from a national workplace survey that found employers are concerned about obesity-related health costs and the need to do more to support employees in preventing and reducing obesity. The briefing also addressed an obesity benefit designed by DMAA: The Care Continuum Alliance that the Service Employees International Union (SEIU) may pilot for its employees and that will be evaluated for effectiveness.

STOP Obesity Alliance, Chair Dr. Richard H. Carmona, National Opinion Research Center Reveal Findings of Survey Showing Employer Concerns About Health, Financial Costs of Obesity

DMAA, SEIU to Present, Discuss One Available Workplace Solution

The STOP Obesity Alliance will reveal findings from a national survey that found employers are concerned about obesity-related health costs and the need to do more to support employees in preventing and reducing obesity. Related to this need, the STOP Obesity Alliance will discuss an obesity benefit designed by DMAA: The Care Continuum Alliance that the Service Employees International Union (SEIU) may pilot for its employees and that will be evaluated for effectiveness. This effort supports a STOP Obesity Alliance policy recommendation for innovative approaches to preventing and managing overweight and obesity. It also typifies the kind of innovation that could help the country take a step forward in overcoming obesity.

The STOP Obesity Alliance presented its newly-released policy recommendations to policymakers and the press at a briefing on Capitol Hill on Wednesday, February 27th. The speakers at the event, SEIU Healthcare's Chair, Dennis Rivera and National Business Group on Health's Vice President, LuAnn Heinen presented the viewpoints of both labor and business on how obesity affects their industries. Both speakers highlighted how the STOP Obesity Alliance policy recommendations provide common ground for action.

Christine Ferguson on the Effects of Obesity on Healthcare Costs and Spending

In this audio clip the STOP Obesity Alliance Director Christine Ferguson is discussing the effects of the rise in obesity on American healthcare costs and spending. This discussion took place on a National Association of Hospitals and Public Health Systems conference call. Ferguson outlines the objectives of the STOP Obesity Alliance, including efforts to address and identify cultural biases around obesity and to cultivate a more favorable policy environment.
