Is the Obesity Epidemic Leveling Off? Don’t be too Sure.

Recently, CDC epidemiologists published an article in the Journal of the American Medical Association to the effect that there was not a significant change over the past 12 years in the nation’s obesity rate of 35.5% for adult men and 35.8% for adult women.

The STOP Obesity Alliance hosted a webinar on Tuesday, December 6, in which experts discussed state legislative activities related to obesity and weight-related chronic disease that could signal broader trends in the future.  Topics included obesity surveillance and tracking efforts, food and beverage taxes, and efforts to restrict state employee benefits plan coverage. Scott Kahan, M.D., M.P.H. serves as Clinical Advisor for the STOP Obesity Alliance, providing counsel and oversight for the Alliance's ongoing research, writing and initiatives.

Dr. Kahan is a physician trained in both clinical medicine and public health. He specializes in preventive medicine and obesity prevention and treatment. He is Co-Director of the George Washington University Weight Management Center.

Dr. Kahan received his undergraduate degree in bioengineering from Columbia University, his medical degree from Medical College of Pennsylvania, and his Master's of Public Health degree from Johns Hopkins School of Public Health. He trained in Internal Medicine at Franklin Square Hospital Center and Preventive Medicine at Johns Hopkins University, where he served as Chief Resident.

He has published 14 books in the fields of medicine, nutrition, and public health, and is the Editor-in-Chief of a series of medical texts that have been published internationally and translated into nine foreign languages. He recently co-authored a 700-page nutrition guide for physicians, which is distributed free-of-charge to medical students in North America. His upcoming textbook, to be published by Johns Hopkins University Press, is titled Health Behavior Change in Populations: The State of the Evidence and Roles for Key Stakeholders.

Dr. Kahan serves on the Faculty of both the George Washington University School of Public Health and Health Services and the Johns Hopkins Bloomberg School of Public Health, where he has served as Associate Director of the Johns Hopkins Weight Management Center and core faculty of the Preventive Medicine Residency Program. He teaches several courses on obesity, nutrition, public health, health promotion, and health behavior change to medical students, graduate students, and undergraduate students.

Dr. Kahan has been involved in numerous national and local initiatives for chronic disease prevention, nutrition, and obesity. He has worked with Federal, state, and local governments, the National Institutes of Health, and advocacy groups and non-governmental organizations. He has published articles in several scientific journals, newspapers, and magazines.
